Lakes provide various ecosystem services that support biotic habitats and human life. In contrast, many lakes in the world are degraded due to pollutant supply from surrounding areas and human activities in the lake. Lake Toba, which is the largest lake in Indonesia, has indicated a polluted condition. However, the source and load of each pollutant are not yet known. A study has been conducted to determine nutrient and organic load levels entering the lake represented by Total Phosphorus (TP) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), respectively. Observations were carried out in November 2017 at 22 locations, i.e., at 12 inlet rivers debouching to the lake and 10 sites at the lake. The pollutant impact was assessed from water class criteria based on COD, waters trophic status based on TP, and vertical oxygen profile representing cage aquaculture (CA) and non-cage aquaculture (NCA) areas. Based on COD and government regulation number 82/2001, water quality at the lake inlets was class III and IV. In the lake area, water class in NCA was III, while in CA the water class tends to be III and IV. Estimated TP loading from the catchment area was 138 tonnes/yr, while that from cage aquaculture activity was 570.33 tonnes/yr. Pollutants have caused the worsening of water class, increasing water column anoxia in the hypolimnion layer and eutrophication in Lake Toba.

Research in Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) has undergone many developments, including parameter suitability selection. The thermal front has become the primary parameter input of ZPPI (LAPAN's PFZ). The accuracy of the thermal front parameter to predict PFZ cannot be known with certainty because of the radius between ZPPI with fishing areas, so it is necessary to develop parameters to support the thermal front. The thermal front described the meeting area of two water masses with different temperature characteristics associated with high nutrients (chlorophyll-a) and indicate an upwelling's appearance. This study aims to determine ZPPI by approaching the thermal front and mesotrophic area's matching area (chlorophyll-a concentration 0.2-0.5 mg/m3). Chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature data for thermal fronts detection are derived from Aqua MODIS satellite on Google Earth Engine (GEE). The matching area's approach between the thermal front and mesotrophic area is used in the analysis of ZPPI. The results show thermal front and mesotrophic area on WPPNRI 715 have a variation seasonally where December appears like the peak event. The two parameters are distributed evenly from coastal areas to high seas. This method generates thermal fronts that have more than 60.3% matching with the mesotrophic area where the amount is acceptable due to has more than 50% amount of moderate ZPPI. The accuracy improvement in ZPPI both on the coast and open sea can be determined through this approach.

Impact of land use and socio-economic changes in water catchment area on total suspended solid (TSS) in Lake Toba

Changes of socio-economic and land use in the water catchment area are factors that affect the water quality of a lake. This study quantified the impact of socio-economic factors and the dynamics of land covers of Lake Toba water catchment area on the total suspended solid (TSS) parameter, one of the parameters in water quality indicators. Statistical analysis was run by using multiple linear regressions. Parameters observed were TSS, socioeconomic related data and land use in Samosir, Tobasa, Simalungun, Dairi, Humbang Hasundutan and North Tapanuli Regencies in 2008, 2012 and 2016. The results indicated that the water quality of Lake Toba was slightly polluted in 2016 and in 2017. Based on the regression analysis, it was found that some factors significantly affected the concentration of TSS, namely shrubland and dryland farming at 99% confidence level; the number of populations, Location Quotient (LQ) for dry land paddy field and soybean production at 95% confidence level; and settlement land area, geographic population density, LQ for rice and corn production at 90% confidence level. Managing shrubland through a land rehabilitation program and encouraging a rotational cropping system are recommended strategies to manage the increasing TSS in the Lake Toba.
