Precision agriculture (PA) is a holistic, sustainable, innovative systems approach that assists farmers in production management. Adopting PA could improve sustainable food security and community economic sustainability. Developing an understanding of PA adoption attributes is needed in order to assist extension practitioners to promote adoption and better understand the innovation adoption phenomena. A systematic review of literature was conducted to investigate attributes that foster PA adoption. Thirty-three publications were examined, and four themes were found among the reviewed publications. The results were interpreted using Rogers’ diffusion of innovations framework to address the research objectives. Relative advantage and compatibility were two dominant attributes needed to strengthen the adoption of PA, and the complexity attribute was rarely communicated to promote the adoption of PA. The systematic review indicated the rate of farmer’s PA adoption does not occur at the highest potential levels due to inadequate communication of PA attributes from change agents to farmers. Extension field staff need professional development in communicating the five PA adoption attributes to farmers in order to improve PA adoption and enhance local sustainable food security. Thus, authors recommend future complexity studies from agricultural extension specialists’ perspectives to comprehend demonstratable approaches to motivate farmers’ adoption of PA.

Precision agriculture, a contemporary farming method, harnesses advanced technologies to optimize resource utilization, elevate productivity, and diminish environmental impact. The incorporation of diverse technologies, encompassing hardware, software, and data analytics solutions, is pivotal in accurate decision-making across all agricultural phases. Key technologies such as satellite imagery, drones, sensors, and IoT devices play integral roles in this process. these technologies, enabling farmers to tailor interventions at a granular level and optimize resources like water, fertilizers, and pesticides to enhance yields, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact. However, persistent challenges including data interoperability, accessibility, and adoption restrictions underscore the need for ongoing research and cooperation to fully unlock the potential of precision agriculture in addressing global food security and sustainability challenges. Progress in remote sensing, including satellite imaging and drones, is explored, alongside the integration of GPS and GIS technology for precise field mapping and monitoring. The present review explores precision agriculture technologies, including remote sensing with satellite imaging, drones, GPS, GIS, and sensor applications for real-time data. It also emphasizes transformative potential in reshaping farming practices, enhancing resource efficiency, and contributing to sustainability.

“…While PA seems like the panacea for agricultural challenges ranging from dwindling resources to environmental degradation, its penetration into the realm of small-scale farming is still in nascent stages (Fountas et al, 2015) and demands more academic exploration (Chataut et al, 2023; Gokool et al, 2023; Hedley, 2015; Perz and Wronowski, 2019). The bespoke nature of small-scale farming introduces multi-faceted barriers to the broad-based incorporation of PA (Gabriel and Gandorfer, 2023), encompassing financial constraints (Achukwu et al, 2023; Bosompem, 2021), technical know-how deficits (Yatribi, 2020), infrastructural lapses (Mdoda et al, 2022) and socio-cultural roadblocks (Alexander, 2018). The global agricultural paradigm is witnessing a transformative shift with the advent of precision agriculture. While large-scale agricultural enterprises have been swift in their embrace of this innovation, its uptake among small-scale farmers remains nuanced and complex. This study elucidates the multi-faceted determinants that influence the adoption of precision agriculture within the small-scale farming sector. The study adopts a systematic literature review approach, meticulously selecting and analysing 29 relevant papers. Drawing upon an exhaustive literature review and empirical analyses, the research presents a composite framework weaving economic, technological, social, and environmental factors. Among these, the social dynamics emerge as the most significant factor, shaped by awareness levels, knowledge dissemination pathways, and entrenched cultural norms. These social elements often intertwine with ingrained traditional practices and perceptions, forming the most intricate layer shaping adoption attitudes. Notably, although economic factors like substantial initial investments and the calculus of Return on Investment are present, they are overshadowed by social considerations. The technological landscape is characterised by the challenges of digital literacy, infrastructural readiness, and technological interoperability. Lastly, environmental imperatives, underscored by resource scarcity, climate change resilience, and ecosystem services, offer both challenges and motivations. Together, these factors delineate the intricate roadmap guiding small-scale farmers in their journey toward precision agriculture adoption. This comprehensive exploration provides stakeholders with actionable insights, fostering informed decision-making and strategic interventions to augment precision agriculture's integration within the small-scale farming tapestry.
