Potential ecological distribution of alien mollusk Corbicula largillierti and its relationship with human disturbance in a semi-arid reservoir

Abstract: The introduction of exotic mollusk species has resulted in loss of biodiversity in semi-arid neotropical aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to relate the presence and density of Corbicula largillierti species to human disturbance, providing data for the conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems. Specimens were collected at Epitá cio Pessoa reservoir in December 2011 and June 2012, presenting densities of 20.96 and 62.89 individuals per square meter, respectively. Anthropic disturbance metrics were cal… Show more

“…One of the most problematic bivalve invasions is of the genus Corbicula (Mühlfeld, 1811). These clams may change the ecological condition of freshwater ecosystems, as they are able to alter biochemical cycles and food webs and to compete with native species (Sousa et al 2008a, 2008b; Azevêdo et al 2016). Additionally, their invasions have been associated with economic losses, since Corbicula can foul and obstruct filters and turbines, thus damaging cooling systems and affecting water reservoirs, power stations and water treatment plants, among others (Darrigran 2002; Rosa et al 2011).…”

“…Because of their worldwide distribution and negative ecological and economic impact, extensive knowledge has been gathered about the distribution, morphology, growth, reproduction, and physiology of the most problematic of these (Boltovskoy, ; Karatayev et al., 2007; Orlova et al, 2005; Sousa et al., 2008). However, although C. largillierti has been shown to be a potential invader of a variety of ecosystems (Reyna et al., 2018), there are almost no studies about basic aspects of its biology, reproduction, or physiological traits (Azevêdo et al., 2016; Ituarte, 1984; Martins et al., 2006; Reyna et al., 2013). Filling the gaps of fundamental physiological information on this species is crucial to better understand its invasion capacity, predict the magnitude of its impact, and elaborate suitable management policies (Blackburn et al., 2014).…”

“…However, sampling at distinct environmental conditions is necessary to detect trends of changes in freshwater assemblages (Resh et al 2013), including those generated by large-scale climate changes (Lake 2000, Lake 2003. Analyses of the ecological conditions of these ecosystems have been conducted using water quality bioindicators (Martins et al 2015), including benthic macroinvertebrate community (Morais et al 2017) and exotic species (Azevêdo et al 2016, Linares et al 2017. The integrated analysis of biological metrics and information on land use, physical habitat conditions, and water quality enables ecological assessment at multiple spatial scales (Macedo et al 2016, Ferreira et al 2017, Castro et al 2017.…”
