“…However, we are not aware of prior peerreviewed reports examining the impact of Part D on generic drug use. Our findings are noteworthy given that generic drugs represent an important means of cost savings 8,9 . This is especially important given the burden of out-of-pocket costs for many Americans 26 , associations between cost sharing and non-adherence 27 , and concern about the impact of the Part D doughnut hole on processes and outcomes of care 15,28 .…”

“…It is often easier to intervene on the expenditure of medications because their costs are easily identified. It is already proven that substitution of generic medicines can result in substantial savings [3][4][5]. As a result, the preference for promoting generic substitution among patients was reported in many countries [6,7].…”

“…Along with other options, the generic substitution could be one mechanism for limiting drug expenditure by reducing prescription medicine cost (Haas et al, 2005) but it cannot guarantee the medicine price control. For example, the UK is unique in achieving a high level of generic drug use despite not employing a policy of generic substitution (King and Kanavos, 2002).…”

“…Saving by promoting and prescribing generics medicines couldn't be underestimated because of its potential effects on controlling health expenditures (Haas, 2005). For instance, in Canada the availability, prescription, dispensing and use of generic medicines approximately saved $44-billion over the past five years.…”
