Potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA) differs from the better known voltammetric stripping analysis (VSA) In that the electrochemlcally preconcentrated analyte is stripped chemically, rather than electrochemlcally. We present here comparisons of lower detection limits and other features of PSA and VSA at both macro-and microelectrodes consisting of thin films of mercury on glassy carbon, carbon fiber, and gold substrates. The possibility that certain amalgams and/or metals that undergo sluggish electrochemical oxidation would exhibit more facile chemical oxidation was Investigated. It was found that In fact the PSA of manganese and nickel Is analytically more favorable than the VSA of these metals. The applicability of PSA to such electropositive elements as sodium and potassium, described by us before, was further Improved. Fair resolution of sodium from potassium was obtained by solvent optimization and the use of microelectrodes on gold substrates. The PSA of lithium Is much less favorable than that of sodium or potassium.

Recebido em 16/10/96; aceito em 14/1/97 ULTRAMICROELECTRODES. PART II: CONSTRUCTION AND APPLICATIONS. This work describes the techniques of construction and several applications of ultramicroelectrodes in electrochemistry and electroanalytical chemistry. Disc shaped UME are produced by embedding metal wires on insulating materials such as glass or epoxy resin. In the field of electrochemistry, UME have been applied in studies of the hydrogen evolution reaction and the electrocrystallization of metals. The negligible values of sensibility for ohmic drop and the enhanced mass transport rate by spherical diffusion are the main advantages of UME in these applications. New important conclusions regarding the phenomena under study were drawn from the experimental results. The applications in electroanalytical chemistry involved the determination of contaminants such as heavy metals and nitrites in natural waters and food products. The use of UME requires little sample manipulation and, in general, no need for oxygen removal or the addition of supporting electrolytes.

An easy to build potentiometric stripping analysis system for heavy metal determinations (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu) is described which reaches good sensitivity and precision. Main components are an IBM compatible computer, an ADDA-conversion card and two selfmade electrodes, so it can be realized for one tenth of the price of complete commercial systems. A graphite pencil lead covered with a Hg-film is used as working electrode and a Ag/AgCl electrode as a combined reference/counter electrode. Reproducibility and calibration measurements are reported, heavy metal determinations on soil samples are compared with AAS results.
