Power amplifiers and transmitters for RF and microwave

Abstract: The generation of RF/microwave power is required not only in wireless communications, but also in applications such as jamming, imaging, RF heating, and miniature dc/dc converters. Each application has its own unique requirements for frequency, bandwidth, load, power, efficiency, linearity, and cost. RF power is generated by a wide variety of techniques, implementations, and active devices. Power amplifiers are incorporated into transmitters in a similarly wide variety of architectures, including linear, Kahn,… Show more

“…Envelope elimination and restoration (EER) [1], envelope tracking (ET) [2] and dynamic load modulation (DLM) [3] are some of the most promising examples. The basic principle of these PA architectures is to keep the operating point of the PA close to saturation by manipulating the power supply (ET and EER) or load impedance (DLM), for a wide range of power levels.…”

“…A broadband power amplifier which can cover different frequency bands is required to cut down hardware cost and make a communication system smaller. For some applications such as communication base stations and radar applications [1], the requirements of output power and efficiency are also very critical. GaN device is very suitable for these applications because of its high breakdown field, high electron saturation velocity, as well as high carrier density and mobility.…”

“…Recently, research works have been conducted on extending the bandwidth capability of the Doherty amplifier [1][2][3][4]. However, a number of bandwidth limiting factors makes it difficult to maintain wideband performance in the Doherty amplifier.…”
