Power routing scheme with dual operating modes: two-way Wilkinson divider and one-way signal path

Abstract: A reconfigurable power-dividing scheme has been developed, employing coupled line couplers and mode control switches. Depending on the operating conditions of the switches, it provides two different operating states: two-way Wilkinson equal-split power divider or oneway signal path, which directs all input power to one output port. Input and output matching conditions at both operating modes were accomplished by utilising appropriate even-and odd-mode characteristic impedances of the coupled line coupler.

“…Reconfigurable power dividers are utilized in many applications, including: reconfigurable feeding networks for antenna arrays [9,10] and dual-state amplification schemes [11,12]. In [9], a reconfigurable 1×4 power divider with three states is utilized in an antenna array for beam-forming.…”

“…The performances of these diversity combining schemes can all be improved by MAS with one RF chain. In practice, MAS is implemented by using a RF reconfigurable power combiner [19][20][21] instead of RF switch in front-end, which keeps one RF chain and makes full use of the signals from different diversity antennas. The signals in MAS are not only from each separated antenna but also from their combinations because the RF reconfigurable power combiner can work as a RF switch as well as a RF power combiner under different control conditions.…”

“…For example, the balanced amplifier consisting of two power amplifiers with power dividers in the input and output is widely used to obtain high output power [1]. Recently, reconfigurable power dividers have been demonstrated for high efficiency power amplifications [2,3], where one of two power amplifiers is turned off to increase low-power efficiency while the power divider is reconfigured to power transmission mode, i.e. the overall power amplifier allows dual operating mode, or low-power and high-power mode.…”

“…The high characteristic impedance of Z 02 can be synthesised by coupled lines with S 1 and S 2 off, since this configuration of coupled lines provides the impedance of (Z 0e þ Z 0o )/2, where Z 0e and Z 0o are even-mode and oddmode impedances of the coupled line, respectively [2]. The low characteristic impedance Z 03 is realised by coupled lines with S 3 turned on, providing the impedance of 2Z 0e Z 0o /(Z 0e þ Z 0o ).…”
