Power Two-Wheelers as an Element of Sustainable Urban Mobility in Europe

Abstract: Nowadays in Europe, there is a noticeable increase in the popularity of power two-wheelers (PTW). This is largely due to the increase in urban transport problems. The aim of the study was to present the changes in urban mobility in terms of the use of power two-wheelers. In relation to this process, the activities of local authorities and organisations related to PTW traffic were also presented to adapt the city infrastructure to the traffic of two-track vehicles in selected European countries. The study used … Show more

“…Sustainable urban mobility involves the transition of cities from a normal mode of traffic dominated by private cars to a more sustainable model of urban and regional mobility based on the use of public transport and environmentally friendly modes of transport, including electric buses and electric cars, bicycles, and other non-motorized vehicles as well as walking (Dorocki and Wantuch-Matla, 2021;Kraus and Proff, 2021;Şengül and Mostofi, 2021). Urban mobility is a set of processes for managing the movement of people, goods, and information within the logistics system of the city under the needs and objectives of its development, as well as environmental requirements, and considering the fact that the city is a public organization whose main purpose is to meet the needs of its inhabitants.…”

“…This comes down to an average ratio of ~100 motorcycles per 1000 city citizens for the above countries, which is higher compared to the European average (39.3 in 1994 and 67.8 in 2019). Two-wheel vehicles suggest one of the main solutions for the development of alternative transportation models and for tackling the problem of air pollution in urban centres [9]. This trend may be further supported with appropriate incentives, as well as with information campaigns, already carried out in major European cities like Barcelona, London and Vienna, where positive outcomes have been recorded [9].…”

“…The motorcycle is one of the most popular vehicles all over the world because of its low cost, capacity to transport people to any destination, and ease of squeezing through traffic (Olubomehin, 2017). It is a minor subset of all motor vehicles and one of all country's most straightforward modes of land mobility (Dorocki & Wantuch-Matla, 2021). It is compact and thin, provides less protection than inside a vehicle, and is designed for substantially faster speeds and performance levels than automobiles since it is one of the world's most dangerous ways of transportation (Guerra, 2019).…”
