Abstract:This chapter investigates the utilisation of chemical resources throughout the First World War. Topics covered range from the importance of coal, powering battleships as well as efforts on the home front, to the dependence on electricity generation. Chemical industries also developed during the war, with the chapter discussing the history and uses of coal tar, synthetic organic chemical products in the form of dyes and pharmaceuticals, calcium carbide and acetylene.
