Practical ANN prediction models for the axial capacity of square CFST columns

Abstract: In this study, two machine-learning algorithms based on the artificial neural network (ANN) model are proposed to estimate the ultimate compressive strength of square concrete-filled steel tubular columns. The development of such prognostic models is achievable since an extensive set of experimental tests exist for these members. The models are developed to use the simplest possible network architecture but attain very high accuracy. A total dataset of 1022 specimens with 685 stub columns and 337 slender colum… Show more

“…The model was trained using 75% of the data and tested with the rest through the Bayesian regularization algorithm to ensure the model's generalization and avoid overfitting. This algorithm was selected because it is a robust method with a better generalization process and difficulty in overtraining and overfitting the data, capable of providing an optimal model of a small-size dataset [50,51].…”

“…Concrete is poured into steel-tube columns (CFST) to increase the engineering constructions' toughness (strength and ductility). This method is called a "composite system," which blends concrete with other composite materials (Chandramouli et al, 2022;Fischer et al, 2022;Mohammed et al, 2023;Đorđević and Kostić, 2023). A CFST member is typically made by filling a hollow steel tube with concrete.…”
