Practical Energy Harvesting for Batteryless Ambient Backscatter Sensors

Abstract: Abstract:This work studies the performance of two methods for providing power to an ultra-low power, ambient backscatter tag, omitting the need for any battery. RF energy harvesting from a dedicated source and energy harvesting from ambient light using a single photodiode are compared. Extensive measurement results from tests conducted under real world conditions are offered for both harvesting methods. It is concluded that for a total cost of under 7 Euros the need for a battery can be eliminated, by using a … Show more

“…When compared to the quantity of solar energy, ambient RF energy sources have a very low power densityo, but their main benefit is the continuous availability of radiations around the clock and their availability in both indoors and outdoors. [19] RF energy harvesting is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology that not only removes hazardous RF energy from the atmosphere but also allows it to be used in low-power electronics applications. [20]- [21] Two alternative operating principles can be used to exploit radio frequency (RF) energy such as Wi-Fi, digital TV, and cellular transmissions.…”

“…Ambient signals can fulfill this tiny power requirement. Moreover, the ambient RF sources with additional peripheral components (e.g., boost converter) could overcome the need of a battery in passive devices [124]. Liu et al introduced Amb-BackCom to power passive tags.…”

“…If the chip provides an additional voltage output, a supercapacitor can be used instead of a battery, but the electromagnetic field generated by the RWD is a low-yield and uncertain source for recharging the supercapacitor. It is a good idea to support it by electric energy obtained from mechanical, thermal, or solar transducers [26,27]. Nevertheless, the electromagnetic field generated by the typical radiocommunications systems (e.g., base stations of GSM, Wi-Fi, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access-WiMAX, etc.)…”
