Practices and Attitudes Concerning Endometriosis Among Nurses Specializing in Gynecology

Abstract: Endometriosis is a chronic disease affecting approximately 10% of fertile women. These women often have negative health care experiences. This study adds new knowledge about endometriosis care in a hospital setting and nurses’ attitudes toward the disease. To explore how the personal attitudes of gynecological nurses, their specialized knowledge, and their clinical experiences influenced the way they conceptualized and cared for women with endometriosis, participant observations and semistructured interviews w… Show more

“…It thus seems that the critical variable here is not public awareness of the medical condition per se . Instead, it may be that AMD is an invisible condition (noting experiences of being treated as fraudulent or exaggerating are reported in other medical conditions not easily visible to others, e.g., endometriosis [58,59]), and/or that others do not have sufficient information to understand the specific ways that AMD actually affects vision (i.e., that it impairs fine vision tasks far more than coarse-vision tasks). This argues improving the patient experience requires increasing understanding of the detailed symptoms of AMD, rather than merely its existence.…”

“…Having evidence-based the existing pain treatment protocols, it occurred that also systematic assessment of postoperative pain represented a challenge in clinical practice. 15 In the absence of a better tool, nursing staff representatives at the centers agreed to systematically use the visual analogue scale as their first choice for a pain assessment tool. 16 At present, not only the postoperative pain management but also the documentation has been improved as a positive side effect of the data entry, although clinical challenges still remain.…”

“…Significance of the study: Endometriosis is a chronic disease affecting approximately 10.0% of fertile women and also presents among adolescent females. These women often have negative health care experiences (Bach et al, 2016). Educating nonmedical university girls and increasing their awareness regarding endometriosis help them to acquire knowledge, early detect and avoid major problems as infertility in the future.…”
