Praziquantel-Solid Lipid Nanoparticles Produced by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction: Physicochemical Characterization, Release Profile, and Cytotoxicity

Abstract: Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) can be produced by various methods, but most of them are difficult to scale up. Supercritical fluid (SCF) is an important tool to produce micro/nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution and high encapsulation efficiency. The aim of this work was to produce cetyl palmitate SLNs using SCF to be loaded with praziquantel (PZQ) as an insoluble model drug. The mean particle size (nm), polydispersity index (PdI), zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency (EE) were determined on… Show more

“…The FTIR spectroscopy can be defined as a “ fingerprint analytical technique” for the structural identification of compounds considering that no two chemical structures will have the same FTIR spectrum. The FTIR provides a characteristic signature of chemical or biochemical substances present in the sample by featuring their molecular vibrations (stretching, bending, and torsions of the chemical bonds) in specific infrared regions [44].…”

“…The solvent is quickly and completely removed, and this leads to lipid precipitation. Furthermore, the produced SLNs and NLCs have uniform particle size distribution [ 128 , 129 ]. The o/w emulsions are prepared using water-immiscible solvents [ 128 ] and water-partially miscible solvents [ 130 ].…”

“…Batch sizes ranged from 100 to 5000 mL. The resultant SLNs had a PS of 25 nm, a PDI of 0.5, and an EE of 88.4% [ 129 ].…”

“…The final material is reported to be a dried powder that facilitates the production of improved liquid or solid drug formulations, while the technique is described as environmentally friendly and with potential to be scaled-up. This method is also being adapted for the production of lipid nanoparticles [72].…”
