Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and ‘risk’ in the news

Abstract: This study investigates 'risk' as discussed in news coverage and in relation to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP): a treatment that has been proven to restrict the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In the U.S. and the U.K. & Ireland, there are issues concerning the provision and take-up of PrEP, which can lead to health inequalities. Raising awareness and tackling stigma are priorities in ensuring that those who would benefit from PrEP can access it, since these are reported to be obstacles… Show more

“…Using Sketch Engine software (Kilgarriff et al, 2014), we uploaded the entire corpus for analysis. Next, we conducted a preliminary computational analysis, using corpus linguistics to automatically determine large-scale patterns across the dataset while keeping in mind such observations must be ‘combined with a close, detailed examination of the material in the context of the original material’ (Collins, 2022, p. 382).…”

“…The fear of abandonment of condom culture could be seen as linked to the rise of another ambivalent product of PrEP as pharmakon: the moniker of the 'Truvada whore' (Betts 2021;Bruan 2017;Calabrese & Underhill 2015;Duran 2012;Gonzalez 2019) and the rise of the 'Truvada wars' (Belluz 2014). Early in the launch of Truvada both in the U.S, the UK, and in Scandinavia, PrEP was often framed as a 'party drug' and associated with promiscuity and implicitly in opposition to 'responsible sexual behavior' (Collins 2021;Gonzalez 2019;Mowlabocus 2020). Yet, as PrEP scale-up and roll-out has taken hold in queer communities, PrEP has become more and more of a staple in the biopolitics of gay and queer sexuality.…”

“…They generated themes centred on the alienation of sexual minority men through risk discourse; stigmatising framings of risks manifesting through slut-shaming in the community; and the enactment and embodiment of risk discourse in relation to sexual positioning, condom use, and perceptions of PrEP. Collins (2022) investigated the concept of risk in relation to PrEP when discussed in news coverage in the US, UK, and Ireland, recognising that different conceptualisations of risk aligned with particular political or ideological aims for media outlets. Mowlabocus (2020) focused on the development of discourses of PrEP in the UK press, as framing of PrEP over time shifted from a miraculous new treatment to a promiscuitypromoting pill that drew resources from other groups considered more deserving.…”
