Precise determination of the ground state hyperfine structure splitting of43Ca II

Abstract: Abstract. We have performed a laser microwave double resonance experiment on 43Ca+ ions stored in a Paul ion trap. The ground state hfs splitting has been determined to A v = 3 225 608286. 4(3)Hz. The value is corrected for small Zeeman, Stark and second order Doppler shifts as well as for light shift effects caused by the laserfields. The uncertainty is mainly determined by the errors of these corrections.

“…The hyperfine constant A S 1/2 = −806.4020716 MHz was measured in reference [10]. The g-factors g I ′ = 2.0503 · 10 −4 and g S 1/2 = 2.00225664 were taken from references [24] and [25], g D This value is in good agreement with a previous measurement (∆ 43,40 iso = 4129(18) MHz [10]). Frequency drift between the measurements, accuracy of the reference cavity's free spectral range ∆ F SR and the uncertainty in the determination of the exact line centers limit the accuracy of our measurement.…”

“…For frequency tuning, one of the reference cavity mirrors is mounted using two concentric piezo transducers that are compensated for thermal drift. This allows frequency tuning of [10,11] and our own measurement). Laser light at 397 nm is used for Doppler cooling and detection, the lasers at 866 and 854 nm pump out the D-states.…”

“…Bare spin and orbital (Table I). The magnetic moments were obtained using the reference isotope 43 Ca, with A( 2 P 3/2 ) = −806.40207160(8) MHz [32]. Quadrupole moments were extracted using the calculated electric field gradient, eV J J = 151.3(7) MHz/b [40].…”

“…The hyperfine structure splittings of the 4s, 4p 1/2 , and 4p 3/2 levels in 43 Ca II were measured by fast ion beam collinear laser spectroscopy in [50]. Precise determination of the 4s ground state hyperfine structure splitting of 43 Ca + (3225.6082864(3)MHz) was reported by Arbes et al [51]. The Doppler-free and potentially very narrow resonances were used in Ref.…”
