Predaceous Coccinellidae in Biological Control

Abstract: Coccinellids have been widely used in biological control for over a century, and the methods for using these predators have remained virtually unchanged. The causes for the relatively low rates of establishment of coccinellids in importation biological control have not been examined for most species. Augmentative releases of several coccinellid species are well documented and effective; however, ineffective species continue to be used because of ease of collection. For most agricultural systems, conservation t… Show more

“…The predaceous coccinellids are important natural enemies of several small phytophagous insects and acarines and are therefore considered as potentially good biocontrol agents (Obrycki & Kring, 1998). The ladybeetle Propylea japonica (Thunberg) is one of the predominant species of predators in northern China, preferentially preying on young larvae and eggs of many insect pests in the field and greenhouse vegetables.…”

“…Entre os inimigos naturais, os coccinelídeos são os predadores mais relacionados com o controle biológico de insetos-praga (Obrycki & Kring, 1998). Aproximadamente 490 gêneros e 4.200 espécies têm sido descritos e, entre estas espécies, 90% são consideradas benéficas, principalmente por sua ação pre- Paulo Donato Castellane, s/n, CEP 14884-900 Jaboticabal, SP.…”

“…Host plants may influence predation efficiency either directly or indirectly, due to either a change in prey susceptibility or predator success in searching for its prey (Obrycki and Kring, 1998). Thus, the trichomes may influence the behavior and predation ability of natural enemies (Hare, 1992;Guershon and Gerling, 2006), and predator efficiency may be adversely affected due to an increase in searching time for the prey (Botrell et al, 1998).…”
