Predation on common tern eggs by the yellow-legged gull at the Ebro Delta

Abstract: SUMMARY:The Ebro Delta holds a large seabird community, including a common tern (Sterna hirundo) local population of 3,085 pairs in 2000 which breeds scattered in several colonies. At El Canalot colony, 1,178 (1999) and 1,156 pairs (2000) of this species bred distributed in 32 and 38 sub-colonies respectively. These sub-colonies varied in size from 1 to 223 pairs and were placed near the main breeding colonies of yellow-legged gulls (Larus cachinnans) and Audouin's gulls (L. audouinii), which are potential … Show more

“…When the islets are overtaken by invasive species, this may lead to population declines in the native species. The decline may be even stronger given that, like many other large gulls, the Caspian gull is an opportunistic predator that steals waterbirds' eggs and hunts their chicks (Vidal et al 1998;Bosch et al 2000;Väänänen 2000;Hernandez-Matias and Ruiz 2003). This predatory behaviour may thus act in synergy with competition for nesting sites to increase the negative effect of this invasive species.…”

“…The data for this application were collected during a study of the settlement pattern of common terns on a small islet in the Delta d'Ebre (Hernández and Ruiz, 2003). The islet was inspected at two-day intervals throughout the 2000 breeding season.…”

“…One of the potential nest predators on the island could be the Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix) (Figure 2), which nests in low numbers (Sušić et al, 1990). Yellow-legged Gulls (Larus michahellis) can also pose serious predation pressure in the Mediterranean region (Vidal et al, 1998;Herná ndez-Matías and Ruiz, 2003). This species is frequent in the inland part of Šolta Island (Sušić et al, 1990).…”
