Abstract:Background
Biophotovoltaics (BPVs) promise a low-cost, sustainable option for electricity and solar fuels production from just light as an energy source, water as an electron source, and air as an inorganic carbon source. This is achieved by harnessing the processes of photosynthesis and respiration by exoelectrogenic photosynthetic microorganisms in electrochemical cells1,2.BPVs are advantageous over microbial fuel cells in which the microbes require an external organic energy source and an oxygen-free enclos… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
