Predicting Impact of Climate Change on Water Temperature and Dissolved Oxygen in Tropical Rivers

Abstract: Predicting the impact of climate change and human activities on river systems is imperative for effective management of aquatic ecosystems. Unique information can be derived that is critical to the survival of aquatic species under dynamic environmental conditions. Therefore, the response of a tropical river system under climate and land-use changes from the aspects of water temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration were evaluated. Nine designed projected climate change scenarios and three future land-use… Show more

“…Figure 4 shows that the basin water temperature is affected by the climatic conditions. It can observe that the basin water temperatures increase with increasing solar radiation intensity and ambient temperature which corresponds to in the finding previous study [19]. The highest value of basin water temperature was recorded in 19.06.2019, which reached 48.6 at 15:00 pm, followed by day 18.06.2019 which recorded 39.9 at 16:00 pm, while on day 17.06.2019 it reached 30.5 at 16:00 pm.…”

“…In particular, hypoxia can cause the collapse of oxic river ecosystems, leading to potential extirpation of fish and other fauna [14]. Artificial alterations of temperature and oxygen dynamics can have cascading effects on other water quality parameters, on the integrity of aquatic ecosystems, and on associated services [15].…”

“…Water quality modeling studies predicted depletion of DO under streamflow, RWT, and land use changes for various basins globally 1 , 7 , 15 19 . Such studies modeled RWT based on regression models 18 and process-based stream temperature models 15 , 16 and river water quality models such as QUAL2K 17 , 19 .…”
