Predicting Recurrence and Survival in Patients with Laryngeal Cancer by Means of DNA Cytometry, Tumor Front Grading, and Proliferation Markers

Abstract: The cure rates for squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx have improved little over the past few decades. Despite the large number of therapeutic and histopathologic studies that have been performed, there are currently no morphologic or cytologic markers available to predict outcome in patients with laryngeal cancer. In an attempt to create such a system, tissues from 40 patients who underwent surgery for carcinoma of the larynx were examined for this pilot study. The examinations included routine histology, m… Show more

“…Only from glioblastomas or high-grade lymphomas were similar or higher SUV reported [37,38]. There are a number of parameters, which have proven prognostic value in squamous-cell carcinomas of the head and neck (growth fraction, degree of DNA aneuploidy, tumor front grading) [39][40][41], independently of clinical parameters [15,[42][43][44][45][46].…”

“…Clinicomorphological characteristics of patients were listed in Table 1. Morphological estimation was performed on H&E-stained sections in the most invasive of the tumor, according to TFG classification [14]. TFG features in the peripheral zones of the tumor were assessed in at least five different regions of the peripheral part of the tumor (magnification ×200, number of mitoses magnification ×400).…”

“…Most recently, malignancy grading of the deep invasive margins of oral and laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas proved to yield highly significant and independent prognostic information (Bryne et al, 1992(Bryne et al, , 1995Welkoborsky et al, 1995;Woolgar and Scott, 1995). Furthermore, the identification of putative biological markers for estimating the biological aggressiveness of a tumour (the speed with which the cancer grows and metastasizes) has been proposed to yield additional prognostic relevance in different kinds of human malignancies (Fielding et al, 1992).…”
