Sexual abuse is associated with a host of negative repercussions in adolescence. Yet, the possible mechanisms linking sexual abuse and negative outcomes are understudied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among self-blame, shame, coping strategies, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. The sample included 147 sexually abused adolescent girls between 14 and 18 years of age. A total of 66% of girls reached clinical score for PTSD and 53% reached clinical score for depressive symptoms. Close to half (46%) reported suicidal thoughts in the past three months. Shame was found to partially mediate the relationship between self-blame and PTSD. Shame and depressive symptoms were also found to partially mediate the relationship between self-blame and suicidal ideation. Results suggest that shame is a crucial target in interventions designed for sexually abused adolescent girls. The bulk of studies have shown more depressive symptoms, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal ideation (Hillberg, Hamilton-Giachritsis, & Dixon, 2011;Maniglio, 2009;Paolucci, Genuis, & Violato, 2001) among CSA victims than among the general population, especially during adolescence (Kendall-Tackett, Williams, & Finkelhor, 1993;Tyler, 2002). A recent review revealed a significant association between CSA and suicidal ideation or attempts in 49 out of 52 studies conducted with adolescents (Miller, Esposito-Smythers, Weismoore, & Renshaw, 2013). In their review of the literature, shame, selfblame, and avoidance coping strategies were identified as crucial factors related to a heightened risk of emotional distress among victims of CSA. Yet, few studies have explored the impact of these factors on outcomes in sexually abused adolescents. InngangurKynferðislegt ofbeldi og áreitni gagnvart börnum og unglingum er ein mesta ógn við heilbrigði þeirra vegna þess hversu alvarlegar afleiðingar það getur haft í för með sér. Það er því ekki að undra að umraeðan um þetta vandamál hafi verið mikil undanfarna áratugi. Samhliða hafa birst fjölmargar rannsóknir á þessu sviði, svo sem á afleiðingum, orsökum og við hvaða að-staeður slíkt ofbeldi á sér stað, 1 en ekki síður hversu algengt það er.2,3 Í ljós hefur komið að slíkt ofbeldi eykur sálraen vandamál og áhaettuhegðun hvort sem það felur í sér líkamlega snertingu eður ei. 4 Algengt er einnig að afleiðingarnar séu viðvarandi fram á fullorðinsár. 5Kynferðislegt ofbeldi felur í sér kynferðislega hegð-un gagnvart einstaklingi sem er höfð í frammi gegn vilja, án samþykkis, með ofbeldi, stjórnun eða ógn-andi haetti.6 Kynferðislegt ofbeldi gagnvart barni telst samkvaemt Alþjóðaheilbrigðisstofnuninni (World Health Organization -WHO) vera öll þátttaka barns í hverskyns kynferðislegum athöfnum sem það skilur ekki til fullnustu, er ófaert um að veita samþykki fyrir, hefur ekki þroska til að veita samþykki, brýtur gegn landslögum eða samfélagslegum viðmiðum. Slíkt ofbeldi gagnvart barni getur átt sér stað milli tveggja barna eða milli barns og fullorðins einstaklings sem hefur yfirburðastöðu gagnvart þolandanum, til að mynda með tilliti til aldurs, þroska, stöðu eða líkam-legra yfirburða. 7Talið er að ein af hverjum þremur til fjórum konum og einn af hverjum 6 til 10 körlum hafi orðið fyrir kynferðislegu ofbeldi í aesku. Stúlkur eru þrisvar sinnum Inngangur: Kynferðisleg áreitni og ofbeldi gagnvart börnum og unglingum er ein alvarlegasta ógn við heilbrigði þeirra. Markmiðið var að rannsaka algengi og áhrif þess á íslenska unglinga í 10. bekk. Efniviður og aðferðir: Rannsóknin byggir á gögnum úr íslenska hluta HBSC-rannsóknarinnar á heilsu og lífskjörum skólabarna. Alls tóku 3618 íslenskir nemendur þátt í alþjóðlegri spurningalistarannsókn sem lögð var fyrir alla nemendur í 10. bekk í öllum skólum landsins að einum undanskildum. Reynsla nemenda af kynferðislegri áreitni og ofbeldi var metin með því að spyrja hversu oft þau hefðu gegn sínum vilja verið: a) snert með kynferðislegum haetti, b) verið látin snerta annan einstakling með kynferðislegum haetti, c) verið reynt að hafa við þau samfarir eða munnmök eða d) einhverjum hefði tekist að hafa við þau samfarir eða munnmök.Niðurstöður: Niðurstöður leiddu í ljós að 14,6% (527) þátttakenda höfðu orðið fyrir einhvers konar kynferðislegri áreitni eða ofbeldi. Af þeim höfðu 4,5% (162) orðið fyrir slíku einu sinni en 10,1% (365) höfðu annaðhvort orðið oftar fyrir ákveðinni gerð ofbeldis eða því hafði verið beitt gegn þeim á margvíslegri hátt. Um 1% þátttakenda, eða 35 einstaklingar, sögð-ust hafa orðið mjög oft fyrir naer öllum gerðum ofbeldis og áreitni. Tíðni vanlíðunar og áhaettuhegðunar var mun haerri hjá þeim sem höfðu orðið fyrir kynferðislegri áreitni eða ofbeldi.
