Predicting the Lateral Load Carrying Capacity of Reinforced Concrete Rectangular Columns: Gene Expression Programming

Abstract: This research presents a novel approach of artificial intelligence (AI) based gene expression programming (GEP) for predicting the lateral load carrying capacity of RC rectangular columns when subjected to earthquake loading. To achieve the desired research objective, an experimental database assembled by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) center consisting of 250 cyclic tested samples of RC rectangular columns was employed. Seven input variables of these column samples were utilized to develop… Show more

“…However, R 2 alone fails to explain the accuracy of the model as this indicator represents changes in the mean response; hence, another coefficient called the adjusted coefficient of explanation (R 2 adj ) is used to calculate, which, unlike R 2 , the average sum of squares is used instead of the sum of squares. Equations ( 4) and (5) show how these two coefficients are calculated [35].…”

“…In most countries of the world, flexible pavements always have the largest share in road construction; however, the application of this pavement is accompanied by high environmental hazards and disadvantages, such as instability against atmospheric factors, low resistance to heavy loads, and the need for constant repair and replacement [5]. Many studies have been conducted in the application of concrete types.…”

“…Many previous studies indicated no standard method for selecting the GEP setting parameters as it is based on the trial-and-error approach. However, some common parameters play an essential role in the model's performance, including the linking function, head size, number of chromosomes, and number of genes [16,64,65]. Therefore, the model was developed after several iterations of trial and error to achieve the best-fitted model with the highest R 2 value and the fewest errors for both the training and validating datasets.…”

“…This study aims to identify the dynamic response of the scaled RC structure with and without attached dampers, and it performs structural reliability of the tested model under the excitation of Peak Ground Acceleration of 0.1 g to 1.0 g with a unidirectional shaking table. Asghar et al [ 24 ] presented a novel approach of artificial intelligence-based gene expression programming for predicting the lateral load-carrying capacity of RC rectangular columns when subjected to earthquake loading. The Kazakh team, led by Volokitina and Kolesnikov [ 25 , 26 ], presented studies on the possibility of utilizing technogenic waste from the metallurgical industry by the method of complex processing to reduce the anthropogenic load on the environment of the region, with the example given of a zinc silicate–magnetite–carbon system.…”
