Predictive and Prognostic Value of BRAF and NRAS Mutation of 159 Sentinel Lymph Node Cases in Melanoma—A Retrospective Single-Institute Study

Abstract: Purpose: To assess the prognostic role of sentinel lymph node status (SLN) in melanoma patients, a statistical comparison was performed with the application of already known prognostic factors, mutational occurrence of BRAF and NRAS in the primary tumor, as well as disease outcome. Methods: Our retrospective single-center study involved 159 melanoma cases, who underwent SLN biopsy. The following clinico-pathological data were collected: age, gender, location of primary tumor, Breslow thickness, ulceration degr… Show more

“…Perineural invasion is generally considered unusual and of little prognostic value in cutaneous melanomas, with the notable exception of desmoplastic melanomas where it has been associated with local recurrence [ 28 ]. Nevertheless, perineural invasion has also been linked to local recurrence, sentinel lymph node positivity, in-transit metastases, and reduced PFS and OS in other types of cutaneous melanomas [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. Moreover, a few recent studies have proven that perineural invasion is an independent prognostic factor for cutaneous melanomas in general [ 34 , 35 ].…”

“…However, there is no prognostic model that help predict the OS of elderly patients with ulcerative melanoma (uCM). Therefore, developing a prognostic model for individualized predictions of survival among elderly patients with uCM is highly urgent [5]. Nomogram is a comprehensive model that combined some important elements to predict the event probability, which is a helpful graphical predictive medium for providing the prediction of OS for individual patient [6,7].…”
