Predictive Capability of Bedload Equations Using Flume Data

Abstract: The study on bedload transport behaviour is widely explored from the last few decades and many semiempirical or empirical equilibrium transport equations are developed. The phenomenon is a very complex due to its varied physical properties like velocity, depth, slope, particle size in the alluvial system. In practical applications, these formulae have appreciable deviation from each other in derivation and also their ranges of applications are different. Here, bedload transports have been categorized into mode… Show more

“…The well-controlled laboratory flows have been subject to both mathematical (e.g. Berzi, 2011;Capart and Fraccarollo, 2011;Talukdar et al, 2012) and physical modeling in either steep flumes (Recking, 2010;Recking et al, 2008;Capart and Fraccarollo, 2011) or pipe loops (Matoušek, 2009;Krupička, 2009, 2012a;Vlasák et al, 2012). Current laboratory investigations of pipeline transport of high concentrated slurry flows focuses on a complex flow behaviour associated with a very broad particle size distribution of solids fractions typically transported in industrial slurry pipelines (e.g.…”

“…Data driven models (regression, Artificial Neural Network) were used to explain the bedload transport process due to the limitations of defining this complex process in a precise formula (Talukdar et al 2012). The following formulae were used within this approach:…”

“…Identifying and quantifying the characteristics of sand waves is fundamental to the analyses of topography of river bed and its interrelations with flow and sediment transport (Ramsankaran et al, 2010;Rao and Kumar, 2009;Talukdar et al, 2012). Despite significant efforts over last decades, it is still difficult to give assured answers to basic questions such as how to characterize a dune-covered bed, including bedform shapes, sizes, three-dimensionality, and their statistical natures (ASCE, 2002).…”
