Predictor Factors for Chronicity in Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura in Children

Abstract: (1) Background: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acute autoimmune blood disorder that is the main cause of thrombocytopenia in children. It is characterized by a decrease in platelets below 100 × 109/L, and limited evolution with severe complications such as intracranial hemorrhage. The chronic form is defined by the persistence of thrombocytopenia more than 12 months after diagnosis. (2) Methods: We performed a retrospective study over a period of 10 years (1 January 2011–31 December 2020) at the Emergency… Show more

“…Recent data sustain the definition of chronic ITP as thrombocytopenia (<100,000/µL) which lasts for more than 12 months, whereas a 3-12-month interval of thrombocytopenia qualifies as persistent thrombocytopenia [2]. Risk factors for ITP chronicity include age at diagnosis, female sex and platelet count at the time of the diagnosis [14].…”

“…In most cases, one to four weeks after being affected by a prevalent viral infection, an autoantibody is created against the platelet level which causes a sudden reduction in platelets. This disease might be revealed through some mild symptoms such as petechiae, purpura, and ecchymosis on the skin to some severe ones like severe menorrhagia, Intra-cerebral Hemorrhage (ICH), or severe bleeding that requires emergency procedures (3)(4)(5). Seventy to eighty percent of the patients will observe automatic recovery in six months, and it seems that the treatment does not have any effect on the normal course the disease.…”
