Predictors and Prognosis of Inability to Get Up After Falls Among Elderly Persons

Abstract: The risk factors for inability to get up were similar to those for falling, although certain factors imparted a particular risk of inability to get up without help. The frequency of inability to get up and the short- and long-term morbidity associated with this inability suggest the need for preventive and treatment efforts.

“…People frequently lay involuntarily on the ground for an extended period of time after falling, developing other complications not directly related to the fall. This is known in the medical community as long lie (Bisson, Peterson, & Finlayson, 2015;Tinetti, Liu, & Claus, 1993). The Personal emergency response system (PERS) is a signaling device that was developed in the '80s and has achieved good acceptance in home healthcare community to help patients get immediate help.…”

“…Studies 17,19 involving older adults have demonstrated a strong association between the inability to get up after a fall and balance or mobility problems. In the present study, although the presence of balance or mobility problems was significantly different between fallers with quick versus delayed IR, leg weakness was independently associated with delayed IR, while balance or mobility problems were not.…”

“…18 Among uninjured older adult fallers, the inability to get up without help after falling is associated with age (>80y), depression, and balance and gait problems. 19 Given the prevalence and consequences of the inability to get up after falling among older adults, it is surprising that so little is known about this consequence of falls in PwMS. Only Gunn et al 7 reported some information on the matter, reporting that 3 of 104 fallers were unable to get up from the floor after a fall, with only 1 reporting a long lie.…”

“…The Project Safety cohort, a probability sample of community-living older persons in New Haven, Connecticut, first assembled in 1990, has been described previously [10]. Briefly, non-age-restricted housing units were sampled to identify persons at least 72 years of age who spoke English, Spanish, or Italian; could follow simple commands; and were ambulatory within their households.…”
