Predictors of pain and use of pain medications following primary Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA): 5,707 THAs at 2-years and 3,289 THAs at 5-years

Abstract: BackgroundStudy pain and use of pain medications and their predictors after primary Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA).MethodsWe examined whether gender, age (reference, < = 60 yrs), body mass index (BMI; reference, <25 kg/m2)), comorbidity measured by Deyo-Charlson index (5-point increase), anxiety and depression predict moderate-severe hip pain and use of pain medications 2- and 5-years after primary THA. Multivariable logistic regression adjusted for these predictors and distance from medical center, operative di… Show more

“…51 Two studies were in multiple centres, 58,102 and three were studies in single centres. 49,103,104 Cohorts were generally similar with regard to patient age (range of means or medians 65.0-73.0 years) and sex (range of percentage female 48.3-63%). Losses to follow-up ranged from 5.8% to 47.6%.…”

“…The importance of these observations must be evaluated in view of many other infl uences on the prevalence of thigh pain after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Several authors emphasize the contribution of factors related to patients (e.g., obesity, depression), implants (e.g., material, design), or operative techniques (e.g., overreaming) [4,18,35,37,39,40,55] .…”
