Predisposing factors for seroma formation in patients undergoing thyroidectomy: Cross-sectional study

Abstract: IntroductionSeroma is defined as collection of fluid within the surgical site during postoperative period that causes several complications. Recognition of predisposing risk factors can lead to avoid seroma formation after thyroidectomy.Materials and methodsA cross-sectional study was carried out during a 3-year period and 678 patients were enrolled the study. We recorded demographic data, past medical history and the type of thyroidectomy were for all patients. We measured total and ionized serum calcium and … Show more

“…The bleeding rate after open and endoscopic techniques varies from 0.36% to 4.3% [ 33 ]. Seroma formation subsequent to thyroid surgery varies from 1.3% to 7% [ 34 ]. The results of our meta-analysis showed no significant differences in postoperative bleeding and seroma formation in transaxillary thyroidectomy versus open thyroidectomy.…”

“…However, the prior meta-analysis study [25] concluded that there were no statistically significant differences in the incidence of neck hematoma/seroma in those with usage of drains or those without drains. In a recent study reported that increasing age of the patient, high body mass index, and low level of ionized calcium are a predisposing factor for seroma formation [26]. Stitch granuloma was observed in one patient and we found that the suture material used was catgut as this suture causes considerable inflammatory reaction .…”

“…Dehal and colleagues investigated 147,344 thyroid and parathyroid procedures and reported a hematoma in the neck was found in 1.5 percent [ 22 ]. Ramouz et al found that 70 of 6,830 hematomas required exploration in a large case-controlled study, accounting for 1.02 percent of all hematomas and found no significant difference in postoperative hematoma formation between the Ligasure small jaw and Harmonic scalpel groups [ 23 ].…”
