PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF INTERLEUKIN-6 CHANGES IN PRE- AND POSTOPERATIVE IN DIABETIC PATIENTS WITH BMI<35 SUBMITTED TO PARTIAL DUODENAL SWITCH

Abstract: Background: Studies related to obesity have shown association with metabolic syndrome. Data showing that obesity is capable to cause low grade chronic inflammation, without its classic signs and symptoms, call attention to researches to study different cells types and the mechanism of the inflammatory process. Aim: To evaluate the variation of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL6) in diabetic patients with BMI <35 kg/m2 in the pre and postoperative of partial duodena… Show more

“…Several studies document the influence of weight loss in improving the quality of life 2 , 9 , 13 , 16 , 18 , 26 . This improvement was described by Hachem and Brennan 16 in a systematic review finding that bariatric surgery produced better results compared with other treatments for obesity, especially in the first two years after surgery.…”

“…Studies have established that lipopolysaccharides (LPS) induce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and interleukins [ 38 ]. Cytokines are signaling polypeptides used in cell communication by the immune system during the inflammatory response; they act on virtually all cell types and in mRNA synthesis [ 38 ]. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is the most important mediator of the acute inflammatory response and is the main procoagulant cytokine [ 3 , 38 ].…”

IL-10 has anti-inflammatory and suppressive effects on most hematopoietic cells and indirectly suppresses the production of other cytokines.…”
