Preliminary Phytochemical Screening and Biological Activities ofBulbine abyssinicaUsed in the Folk Medicine in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

Abstract: Bulbine abyssinica A. Rich. is used in traditional medicine to treat rheumatism, dysentery, bilharzia, cracked lips, back pain, infertility, diabetes mellitus, and gastrointestinal, vaginal, and bladder infections. Therefore, preliminary phytochemical screening, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties of the whole plant (acetone and aqueous extracts) were determined using standard procedures. The in vitro antioxidant model assays revealed that the plant possesses free radical scavenging po… Show more

“…Determination of Total Proanthocyanidin. Total proanthocyanidin was estimated as described by Kibiti and Afolayan [3]. Half a millilitre of 0.1 mg/mL of extract solution was mixed with 3 mL of 4% vanillin-methanol solution and 1.5 mL hydrochloric acid (HCL) and vortexed.…”

“…Phytochemical compounds such as phenolic acid and flavonoids have health benefits, and they are an important part of human diet [2]. These compounds have been reported in many studies as free radical scavengers against superoxide, lipid peroxyl, and hydroxyl radicals [3][4][5]. This, therefore, highlights many of their health-promoting functions as well as the prevention of diseases associated with oxidative damage of membranes, proteins, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) [6].…”

“…The DPPH free radical scavenging activity of the extract was evaluated by the method described by Kibiti and Afolayan (2015). Briefly, 0.5 ml DPPH (0.135 mM) in methanol was mixed with 20 μl of the plant extract and 0.48 ml methanol at different concentrations (10-100 μg/ml).…”
