Preliminary Phytochemistry and Antidiabetic Activity of Portulaca Grandiflora Hook Plant Extract on Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes in Rats

Abstract: Objective: The present study was aimed to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of ethanolic extract of the whole aerial plant of Portulaca grandiflora Hook on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: Experimental diabetes was induced by a single dose of intraperitoneal injection of STZ (150 mg/kg). Adult male Wister albino rats were divided into five groups; normal control, diabetic control, diabetic glibenclamide (5 mg/kg), diabetic P. grandiflora H. extract (200 mg/kg), and diabetic P. grandi… Show more

“…However, vegetative propagation is preferable for its feasibility and efficiency (Cruz et al 2019). Although P. grandiflora is widely known as an ornamental plant, indepth research and exploration of the biochemical compounds of P. grandiflora have led to a piece of knowledge on the use of P. grandiflora as a medicinal plant (Lim et al 2014;Devi et al 2019).…”

“…P. grandiflora is a species of the Portulacaceae family that has been shown to have various pharmacological effects [1]. Apart from highlighting the attractiveness of its morphology, P. grandiflora has various bioactive compounds that are helpful in folk medicine and maintain the health of the body's organs [2]. Ethnobotanical reviews noted that P. grandiflora has edible leaves [3].…”

“…Yan et al [6] found that Portulacanones compounds have cytotoxic activity against human cancer cells. Besides phenolic compounds, the results of biochemical screening of P. grandiflora performed by Devi et al [2] showed the presence of other compounds such as glycosides, phytosterols, saponins, and isoprenoids. Like most medicinal plants, P. grandiflora has a significant role in warding off free radicals.…”
