Preliminary validation of the refractivity from the new radio occultation sounder GNOS/FY-3C

Abstract: Abstract. As a new member of the space-based radio occultation sounders, the GNOS (Global Navigation Satellite System Occultation Sounder) mounted on Fengyun-3C (FY-3C) has been carrying out atmospheric sounding since 23 September 2013. GNOS takes approximately 800 daily measurements using GPS (Global Positioning System) and Chinese BDS (BeiDou navigation satellite) signals. In this work, the atmospheric refractivity profiles from GNOS were compared with the ones obtained from the co-located ECMWF (European Ce… Show more

“…Overall the results confirm a high quality of the GNOS retrievals, in line with recent results by Liao et al (2016), and a robust zero-difference processing being a viable alternative for the single-difference processing. The results also show, that the BDS retrievals achieve a quality comparable to what is well established for GPS retrievals ( ).…”

“…These new GNSS navigation satellites 20 together with planned LEO missions will offer much more RO observations. One of these LEO missions is China's GNss Occultation Sounder (GNOS) onboard first time on the FengYun 3 series C satellite (FY-3C), which was successfully launched on 23 September 2013 (Liao et al, 2016).…”

“…Therefore the refractivity profiles can be used to derive profiles of temperature, water vapor and ionospheric electron density. 15 Because of the ambiguity of temperature and humidity in lower troposphere (Healy and Eyre, 2000;Poli et al, 2002), one-dimensional variation (1-D-Var) analysis, involving co-located profiles of the Chinese global forecast model (used as background at T639L60 resolution), is used to retrieve temperature and humidity profiles (Liao et al, 2016 atmospheric occultation event will occupy an ionospheric occultation channel. Therefore, the number of complete ionospheric occultation profiles is less than that of the atmospheric RO events, and there are typically around 220 GPS and 130 BDS ionospheric RO events per day.…”

“…Thus, the FY-3C satellite POD performance has been evaluated by difference GNSS data processing 5 centers (Liao et al, 2016;Li et al, 2017;Xiong et al, 2017; by using the Bernese software (Liao et al, 2016) and PANDA software , separately. In all these POD data quality evaluations, an internal consistency metrics method named overlapping orbit differences (OODs) has been used.…”
