Preparation and Characterization of Monolayer and Multilayer Langmuir−Blodgett Films of a Series of 6-O-Alkylcelluloses

Abstract: Monolayer and multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of 6-O-alkylcelluloses with various chain lengths were prepared and studied. The surface pressure (pi)-area (A) isotherms of 6-O-alkylcelluloses exhibited characteristic behaviors depending on the length of the alkyl chain and temperature. 6-O-Stearylcellulose on the subphase formed a homogeneous monolayer at 10 mN m(-1). By transfer ratio, FT-IR, and contact angle measurements, it was proved that the monolayer of 6-O-stearylcellulose on the water surface w… Show more

“…Ring-opening copolymerizations of 3-O-benzyl-6-O-ethyl-a-D-glucopyranose 1,2,4-orthopivalate (5) and 3-O-benzyl-6-O-methyl-a-Dglucopyranose 1,2,4-orthopivalate (6) Compounds 5 and 6 were prepared from 3-O-benzyla-D-glucopyranose 1,2,4-orthopivalate by alkylation under basic conditions (Ifuku et al 2005;Kamitakahara et al 2009). Ring-opening copolymerizations of compounds 5 and 6 were carried out with boron trifluoride diethylether complex as an initiator.…”

“…With this procedure, new cellulosic derivatives containing various alkylated groups can be conveniently prepared 18–20. On the other hand, the obtained compounds, like some other natural and biocompatible compounds, have potential applications as the Langmuir–Blodgett films in the different fields and have been appreciated 21–27. The Langmuir–Blodgett films in comparison with the common films have some advantages such as high degree of molecular orientation, precise control of film thickness at the molecular level, control of layer architecture, high optical stability for optical processes, and building up noncentrosymmetric structures for second‐order nonlinear optics 28–30.…”
