“…The observed cross-reactivity of the anti-Spm antibod ies with Spd is in line with earlier findings with polyclonal [13.14] and monoclonal [15,16] anti-Spm antibodies and is probably explained by the very close structural similarity between a tetramine (Spm) and a triamine (Spd).…”

“…It has been claimed that, because of their low molecular weight, polyamines behave like haptens and require cova lent conjugation to a carrier in order to be immunogenic [13][14][15][16], Here, we present evidence that antibodies to poly amines can be obtained by immunization with nonchemically coupled complexes of Spm and Spd with OVA, as well as with Spm in the free form. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that free polyamines might be complexed in vivo to peptides or proteins and become immu nogenic as a result.…”

“…Therefore, considerable effort was put into the immunocytochemical detection of polyamines. Polyclonal (Quash and Wilson, 1967; Bartos et al, 1975; Bartos and Bartos, 1978; Fujiwara et al, 1983; Schipper et al, 1991; Laube and Veh, 1997) and monoclonal (Garthwaite et al, 1989; Schipper et al, 1991; Fujiwara et al, 1994; Delcros et al, 1995; Fujiwara and Masuyama, 1995) antibodies against the polyamines Put, Spd, and Spm have been produced and characterized. Generally, a considerable degree of cross‐reactivity was observed between anti‐Spd and anti‐Spm antibodies, whereas Put could be discriminated.…”

“…There are several reports concerning the production and characterization of polyclonal (Bartos et al, 1975;Fujiwara et al, 1983;Quash and Wilson, 1967;Schipper et al, 1991) and monoclonal (Delcros et al, 1995;Fujiwara et al, 1994;Fujiwara and Masuyama, 1995;Garthwaite et al, 1989;Schipper et al, 1991) antibodies against the polyamines Put, Spd, and Spm. With polyclonal anti-Spd and anti-Spm antibodies, in most investigations and also in this study a considerable degree of cross-reactivity between Spd and Spm was observed.…”
