Preparation and flocculation behavior of cellulose‐g‐PMOTAC copolymer

Abstract: As a contribution to the wider use of biodegradable materials, this article reports the synthesis and testing of cationic polyelectrolyte cellulose derivatives for use as flocculation chemicals. Cellulose macroinitiator is synthesized in DMAc/LiCl solvent system by direct acylation of cellulose with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. Cellulose-graft-poly(N,N-dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) (cellulose-g-PDMAEMA) copolymers are prepared by copper-mediated radical polymerization in homogeneous medium. Formation of the … Show more

“…Adding charged groups to the polysaccharide backbone is one good example from structural tailoring. Reports on the cationization can be found for several polysaccharides, but most of the work on the cationization of polysaccharides has been conducted on starch and cellulose [1][2][3]. Both starch and cellulose have a high molar mass, which is required for certain applications.…”

“…Graing of poly(DMAEMA) from dissolved cellulose has mostly been studied in the context of stimuli-responsive properties in addition to biomedical and occulant applications. [30][31][32][33][34][35][36] Surfaceinitiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of DMAEMA producing polymer brush-modied cellulose surfaces or particles has recently expanded from cellulose lms to CNCs. 9,[37][38][39][40] Here, homopolymerization on CNCs produced short and polydisperse poly(DMAEMA) gras.…”

“…Acylation introduces acyl groups into the nitrogen and oxygen etcetera atoms of biopolymers. Parviainen et al (2014) directly acylated the hydroxyl groups of cellulose with 2bromoisobutyryl bromide to obtain a cellulose macromolecular initiator. Then, N,N-dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate was grafted with the macromolecular initiator to form cellulose-g-poly(N,N-dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate).…”
