Iron tailing powder (ITP) is considered to have the potential to replace cement to manufacture ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). However, the performance of UHPC with the addition of ITP after exposure to high temperatures is more complex. This investigation prepares seven UHPC formulations by introducing different contents of ITP and investigates the mechanical behavior (residual strength), bound water content, and microstructural properties (crystalline and amorphous phases, chemical structure, and morphology) of UHPC subjected to elevated temperatures. The experimental results show that the addition of ITP postpones the spalling of concrete when exposed to high temperatures. The concrete incorporating 15% ITP maintains 53.8% of its original strength at 800°C, unlike the concrete without ITP that maintains 31.6% of its original strength. The addition of ITP increases the number of micropores/cracks in concrete and helps release the vapor pressure caused by water evaporation. The findings of this investigation highlight the potential application of ITP for future UHPC design and manufacture.

It has been reported that iron tailing powder (ITP) has the potential to partially replace cement to prepare ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). However, the reactivity of ITP particles in concrete largely depends on the curing method. This study investigates the effects of curing conditions on the mechanical and microstructural properties of UHPC containing ITP. To achieve this objective, three research tasks are conducted, including (1) preparing seven concrete formulations by introducing ITP; (2) characterizing their mechanical performance under different curing regimes; and (3) analyzing their microstructure by XRD patterns, FTIR analysis, and SEM observation. The experimental results show that there is an optimum ITP dosage (15%) for their application. The concrete with 15% ITP under standard curing obtains 94.3 MPa at 7 days, their early-age strength could be even further increased by ~30% (warm-water curing) and ~35% (steamed curing). The steam curing regime stimulates the activity of ITP and refines the microstructure. This study demonstrates the potential of replacing Portland cement with ITP in UHPC production.

Due to the increasing demand for copper day by day, copper tailings (CT) are the wastes that mining and human-induced activities caused have become a problem all over the world due to the increasing demand for copper. This study evaluates the effect of using CT together with nano silica (NS) and micro silica (MS) in mortars as a partial substitution for cement on mechanical strength properties. Physical, morphological, chemical, mineralogical thermo gravimetric analyzes of CT have been made. In addition, heavy metal concentrations were determined. The mechanical features of the mortars produced by replacing by weight with different proportions of (5%, 10%, 15%) CT, 2% NS and 10% MS cement were determined. As a result, it has been observed that the sum of SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 of the CT, which has a mostly crystalline structure, is 91.40% and its ignition loss is 4.04%. An improvement in compressive strength (compared to the reference mixture) was observed with the use of 5% CT. Up to 10% of CT has provided standard compressive strength values in both NS and MS combinations.
