Preparation, characterization and evaluation of novel elastic nano-sized niosomes (ethoniosomes) for ocular delivery of prednisolone

Abstract: Niosomes embodying ethanol and minimum amount of cholesterol (ethoniosomes) could be promising ocular delivery systems for water soluble and insoluble drugs. This manuscript reports on novel nano-sized elastic niosomes (ethoniosomes) composed of Span 60: cholesterol (7:3 mol/mol) and ethanol, for ocular delivery of prednisolone acetate (Pred A) and prednisolone sodium phosphate (Pred P). These ethoniosomes were prepared with the thin film hydration (TFH) and ethanol injection (EI) methods, characterized for pe… Show more

“…Moreover, the presence of cholesterol (33.33% by weight of the total organic phase) can contribute for increasing the EE using these novel nonionic surfactant vesicles (Aramaki et al, 2015;Gaafar et al, 2014). Increased EE using this niosomal formulation suggests that the surfactant used is applicable for manufacturing controlled release delivery systems for hydrophobic drugs such as Clarithromycin.…”

“…Samples from each formula were centrifuged at 15000 rpm for 90 min at 4 ˚C using an ultra-cooling centrifuge for separation of supernatant containing a non-entrapped drug. After that, the supernatant was collected by micropipette and analyzed using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer (UV-1800 spectrophotometer, Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) against a blank at the predetermined λmax (284 nm) to quantify the contribution of the components to UV absorption [16]. The amount of drug entrapped was expressed as a percentage (EE%) and calculated from the following equation equation 1:…”
