Preparation, Characterization and Thermo-Chromic Properties of EVA/VO2 Laminate Films for Smart Window Applications and Energy Efficiency in Building

Abstract: Thermochromic films based on vanadium dioxide (VO2)/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) composite were developed. The monoclinic VO2 particles was firstly prepared via hydrothermal and calcination processes. The effects of hydrothermal time and tungsten doping agent on crystal structure and morphology of the calcined metal oxides were reported. After that, 1 wt % of the prepared VO2 powder was mixed with EVA compound, using two different mixing processes. It was found that mechanical properties of the EVA/V… Show more

“…However, distribution of large and coarse particle in polymer matrix is always difficult due to low dispersion ability, resulting to non-uniform polymer-particle composite. As found in previous work [4] [12], optical and thermochromic property of polymer composite film is strongly influenced by size and distribution of particle, especially visible light transparency and IR transmittance. Figure 8d presents the TEM image of APTES coated VO2 particles prepared solely in distilled water.…”

“…Therefore, metal oxide nanoparticle tends to form large agglomeration because of their tremendously high surface area/particle size ratio. As described in the previous work [4], mechanical properties and thermochromic properties of the VO2/polymer composite are strongly affected by the dispersion of the metal oxide particles in polymer matrix. This effectively correlates to interfacial adhesion, the size of nanoparticles agglomeration and the interaction between nanoparticles surface and polymer chain.…”

“…Finally, the extrudate was cut and fabricated into a 0.30 (±0.04) mm thick, square-shaped (20 cm x 20 cm) film, using a hydraulic compression mold (LabTech Engineering Co., Ltd.) at 160 °C for a given time. More details concerning the compression molding and the curing time of EVA film can be seen from our earlier report [21].…”

“…The materials, which were recently recognized to exhibit a distinct color change in response to change in temperature, are found in different forms, such as metal oxides, polymers, pigments, and leuco dyes. Reversible thermochromic materials are used in the applications of smart windows, ultra-thin films, temperature sensors, cool colored, and protective coatings [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. The irreversible thermochromic materials experience a permanent color change at certain temperatures and are widely used in applications, such as aeronautical components, furnaces, damage warnings, and thermal flow sensors [27][28][29].…”
