Preparing for the Perpetual Challenges of Pandemics of Coronavirus Infections with Special Focus on SARS-CoV-2

Abstract: COVID-19, arising from novel, zoonotic coronavirus-2, has gripped the world in a pandemic. The present chapter discusses the current internationally implemented pandemic preparedness strategies succeeding/recommended to curb the COVID-19 threat to humankind. The updated phase-wise categorization of a pandemic as recommended by the WHO is described, and associated innovations in surveillance, response, and medical measures/advisory in practice across the globe are elaborated. “…Reductions in mixing and transmission by social distancing or other related restrictive measures induce a multi-facetted "social cost" (C) [52]. This quantity aggregates over various damages of social distancing on economic and psychological well-being, political stability, or cultural diversity [1,16,53,52,54]. Social cost C of mitigation is here assumed to rise with increasing social distance (denoted as SD), which sums over all differences of contact rates m ij to their values m ij,0 before the epidemic, weighed by m ij,0 and sizes of interacting age classes.…”

“…The understanding of COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 is at an early stage. Much research is still needed in various areas such as viral transmission, 93 disease progression, differential clinical diagnosis, 94 laboratory diagnosis, 95 antigenic 96 pathogenicity, 97 epitopes, immunogenic kinetics, 98 drugs, immunotherapeutic products, 99 prevention, and control strategies, 100,101 cell-based therapy, 102 phytotherapy, 103 and clinical trials of plasma transfusion. Recently, the potential targets of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 were predicted by comparison to SARS-CoV.…”
