Prescribers aware: a cross-sectional study from New Zealand emergency departments on the substances used in intentional self-poisoning and their sources

Abstract: INTRODUCTIONIntentional self-poisoning or self-harm through poisoning, is a common cause of presentations to emergency departments (EDs). National datasets do not allow identification of the substances most commonly used in hospital-treated intentional self-poisoning in New Zealand, nor do they capture sources of these substances. AIMTo investigate the specific substances used in intentional self-poisoning and the sources from which they are obtained. METHODSIn this cross-sectional study, information about the… Show more

“…A recent New Zealand study of intentional self-poisoning from ED presentations in those aged 16 and over found that 70% had ingested their own prescription medication. 27 While we were unable to systematically determine the source of substances ingested, our paediatric sample was skewed more towards ingestion of over-the-counter medications. This suggests that harm reduction interventions such as reduced pack sizes, or an age restriction on purchasing, may be effective in this age group.…”

“…7 Iniciativas de saúde pública com o objetivo de prevenir as intoxicações intencionais por substâncias de fácil acesso são sugeridas por várias pesquisas com o objetivo de diminuir a tentativa de suicídio com o paracetamol. 10 Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever as intoxicações por paracetamol associado a outros medicamentos e analisar os fatores associados às interações medicamentosas graves com paracetamol.…”

“…Internationally, hospital-treated self-harm has increased in frequency, especially for young people [ 7 ]. Studies from the US, England, Ireland, and New Zealand have shown that for hospital-presenting or emergency departments (ED) cases of self-harm, self-poisoning is the most common mechanism reported by adolescents and young adults [ 7 11 ], while self-cutting has been reported as the most common method of self-harm in community samples [ 5 ]. In Canada, in fiscal year 2014/15 (April – March), hospitalizations associated with self-inflicted injuries were over three times higher than the number of suicides [ 12 ].…”
