Pressure algometry over normal muscles. Standard values, validity and reproducibility of pressure threshold

Abstract: Pressure threshold is the minimal pressure (force) which induces pain. The pressure threshold meter (PTM) is a force gauge with a rubber disc of 1 cm2 surface. The instrument has been proven to be useful in clinical practice for quantification of deep muscle tenderness. Trigger points, fibrositis, myalgic spots, activity of arthritis as well as assessment of sensitivity to pain can be diagnosed by PTM. This study therefore established standards for pressure threshold as well as the reproducibility and validity… Show more

“…The order of PPT evaluations was standardized and is shown in Figure 2. The PPT is expressed in kg/cm 2 and its standardized values, validity, and reproducibility have been demonstrated in normal muscles (21). Higher PPT values indicate less severe symptoms.…”

“…8,9 Pressure pain threshold (PPT) at the fibular head was measured by algometry, which has previously been shown to be a valid and reliable measure, with higher PPT values indicating less severe sensitivity. 10,11 Manual muscle testing was performed to assess strength and based on the analysis of physical impairment assessment standard from the Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. 12 The above outcome measures were performed at pretreatment, 1 week posttreatment and 3-month follow-up.…”

“…[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] The algometer is a pressure (force) gauge calibrated in pounds of force attached to a plunger that is pressed over a subjects muscle. A number of published studies have used the pressure pain threshold algometer reading as their measurement.…”

“…A number of published studies have used the pressure pain threshold algometer reading as their measurement. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] This method utilizes the patient telling the operator when the algometer pressure first turns to pain. The pressure is recorded from the algometer gauge and the recordings are compared over time.…”
