“…The introduction of male odour cues to grouped, oestrus-suppressed females reinstates their normal cycles, oestrus occurring 72 h later (Whitten, Bronson & Greenstein, 1968 (Whitten, 1958;Whitten et al, 1968) or, as shown here, by removal of the peripheral receptors (vomeronasal organ). The involvement of the vomeronasal system in mediating endocrine changes associated with reproduction has been suspected for some time (Estes, 1972), but has only recently been demonstrated in the rat (Johns et al, 1978) in which urine odours are also associated with the timing of the oestrous cycle (Aron & Chateau, 1971). …”

“…A similar effect resulted from hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus lesions (Carrer et al, 1973/74). On the odier hand exposure to the odour of male or female urine resulted in a 24-hr cycle shortening in 5-day cyclic female rats (Aron and Chateau, 1971;Chateau et al, 1973a). This shortening action appeared to be mediated by the olfactory pathway but, regarding male urine, the same effect was shown to be also produced by licking of the litter (Chateau et al, 1973).…”

“…One sensory system with direct connexions to the anterior preoptic hypo¬ thalamus is the olfactory system (Scott & Pfaffmann, 1967). Studies of the role of olfaction in influencing the oestrous cycle and copulatory behaviour in female rats have yielded conflicting results (Rosen, Shelesnyak & Zacharias, 1940; van der Werff ten Bosch & van Beugen, 1960;Zouhar & DeGroot, 1963;Hughes, 1964;Orbach & Kling, 1966;Aron, Roos & Asch, 1970;Aron & Chateau, 1971;Moss, 1971;Edwards & Warner, 1972). However, Aron et al (1970) have demonstrated that it plays a role in the early mating response of rats with a 5-day cycle.…”
