Prevalence and characterization of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing clinical Salmonella enterica isolates in Dakar, Senegal, from 1999 to 2009

Abstract: A total of 1623 clinical isolates of Salmonella belonging to 229 serotypes were received by the Senegalese Reference Center for Enterobacteria from January 1999 to December 2009. The most common serotypes were Enteritidis (19% of the isolates), Typhi (8%), Typhimurium (7%) and Kentucky (4%). A significant increase in the prevalence of resistance to amoxicillin (0.9% in 1999 to 11.1% in 2009) and nalidixic acid (0.9% in 1999 to 26.7% in 2009) was observed in non-typhoidal Salmonella serotypes. For critically im… Show more

“…A progressive increase in Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) strain has been observed worldwide over the last decade posing a great challenge in healthcare settings since carbapenem is often used as a drug of last resort in the treatment of diseases caused by resistant bacterial strains [15,16]. Multi-drug resistant (MDR) Salmonella and Shigella disenteriae type 1 strains have also been identified and recorded to have escalated into a worldwide problem (17,18).…”

“…An increasing prevalence of quinolone resistance has been reported in West Africa (11)(12)(13), with several mechanistic surveys of quinolone nonsusceptibility within this region recently published (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19). However, no such data are available for Sierra Leone (11).…”

“…During the same period in Senegal, NTS serotypes isolated from patients showed an increase in resistance to amoxicillin from 0.9% to 11.1%, and nalidixic acid from 0.9% to 26.7%. Most of the NTS serotypes were S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium and S. Kentucky [45]. During 2006-2007 in Tunisia, several resistant NTS strains were isolated from human in different regions of the country, and most of them belonged to S. Enteritidis containing different patterns of resistance (Table 2) [46] .…”

“…Such information is essential to understand the prevalence of multidrugresistant Salmonella strains [45]. In Algeria, there are very few epidemiological studies for NTS infection.…”
