Prevalence and Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated From Pasteurized Milk in China

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important food-borne pathogens globally. It produces various toxins and invasive enzymes and can be found in numerous food products. Milk is an important source of staphylococcal food poisoning. After pasteurization, this microorganism or its enterotoxins might still remain in pasteurized milk. Therefore, this study was to investigate the contamination of S. aureus in 258 pasteurized milk from 39 cities of China. The prevalence and leve… Show more

“…The c na is another important virulence factor in S. aureus infections, which binds to collagen [ 41 ] . In agreement with other studies [ 42 , 43 ] , the incidence of the cna gene in our study among the MRSA isolates was 40.9%. The ebps gene, which mediates the binding of S. aureus to elastin [ 44 ] , was found in all MRSA isolates and 94% of the MSSA isolates.…”

“…The ebps gene, which mediates the binding of S. aureus to elastin [44] , was found in all MRSA isolates and 94% of the MSSA isolates. Likewise, all MRSA and MSSA isolates in this study had expressed the eno gene, this was in concordance with other studies conducted [42] .…”

“…In Brazil, a comparative study conducted by Rall et al, (2008) recovered S. aureus from 20.4% of 162 pasteurized and raw milk samples. In contrast, a lower incidence of 3.9% was reported in pasteurized milk samples in China ( Dai et al, 2019 ). However, an increased prevalence was obtained by ( Gündogan et al, 2006 ), who recorded the frequency rate of 56.6% from 180 pasteurized, raw milk, and ice cream samples.…”

“…20 Furthermore, MRSA strains have been detected in different foods for human consumption including bovine milk, cheese, meat products and raw chicken meat. 21,22 It is important to understand the LA-MRSA source and dynamics of transmission in order to monitor and prevent the contamination of the LA-MRSA in domestic animals and retail meat.…”
