“…In addition, the association was reported generally stronger for males, younger patients (18–29 years) and whites, despite the strong predilection of the disease for women and nonwhites [1]. Our study further suggests that HS may be associated with DS in a not negligible proportion of patients.…”

“…Interestingly, a recent population-based cross-sectional study showed a 2.1% prevalence of HS among patients with DS, and a 5.24-fold higher risk (95% CI: 4.62–5.94) of DS patients being affected by HS [1]. In addition, the association was reported generally stronger for males, younger patients (18–29 years) and whites, despite the strong predilection of the disease for women and nonwhites [1].…”

“…documented that there was a 5‐fold increased odds ratio of HS among Down syndrome patients. The potential genetic link predisposing Down syndrome patients to HS was because of an increased expression of the gene encoding amyloid precursor protein (APP) located on chromosome 21 . As APP plays a role in stimulating keratinocyte adhesion, migration, and proliferation, Down syndrome patients are predisposed to keratinocyte hyperproliferation and follicular plugging and thus development of HS.…”
