“…Individual prevalence comparisons may be more appropriate than overall prevalence comparisons among studies. LUTS in our study more commonly involved urinary storage problems rather than voiding difficulties, which were also reported for Western studies [6,7,14,17,18,20]. In the EPIC study, the ICS definition of nocturia (two or more voids per night) yielded similar prevalence (24.0%) to ours [7].…”

“…The prevalence of any LUTS in our study was higher (55.5%) than in the large population-based EPIC study with an original five-nation European and North American survey (48.1%) [7] but lower than in an Internetbased study in the USA, the UK, and Sweden (76.3%) [5] and population-based studies in Brazil (84.1%) [6], Russia, the Czech Republic, and Turkey (81-87%) [17]. The prevalence of any LUTS was lower than that in Korea (68.9%) [18]. In China, prevalence varies between studies.…”

“…Robert et al [11] in 2010 published a prevalence of 16.8% of moderate-to-severe LUTS in a representative sample of French men. Lee et al [18] found for the Korean EPIC study a prevalence of 53.7% in men increasing with age. The most recent study of Berges and Oelke [17] in a community-dwelling German population presents a continuing increase of IPSS with age, while the answer to the quality-of-life question (question 8) remains unchanged over the age groups.…”

“…Since the frequency of urinary incontinence increases with age [2,4] and elderly people above all often suffer from several illnesses that can themselves also trigger the symptom of incontinence, the possibility of a temporary and, in such cases, reversible overactive bladder must be taken into account and checked [14]. The possible causes of reversible incontinence were summarised in 1987 by Resnick with the mnemonic DIAPPERS (diaper) [1].…”

“…The average prevalence of OAB among European women aged 40 years or more amounts to 17 % [2]. The prevalence increases with increasing age [2][3][4]. In the group of over 60-year-olds the prevalence amounts to 45 % [3].…”
