Prevalence of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma in a Rural Adult Chinese Population: The Handan Eye Study

Abstract: Approximately 1% of adults aged 40 years and older living in rural China have POAG. As seen in other populations, increasing age, higher IOP, greater axial length, and having myopia were associated with POAG. Given the rapid aging and myopic shift (acquired myopia) in China's population, POAG is likely to increase in prevalence in the coming decades.

“…Similarly, the Beijing Eye Study and Handan Eye Study reported that the ratio of open-angle glaucoma to primary angle-closure glaucoma was 2.6:1 and 2:1, respectively. [15][16][17] The reasons for the discrepancies between the recent studies and the past investigation have been attributed to differences in the examination techniques, variations in the definition of glaucoma, and regional differences between the provinces of China, leading to variations in climate, lifestyle, and ethnic background. 6,7,11,12,15 In our A total of 181 right and 198 left eyes was missing mainly due to severe media opacity.…”

“…These results concurred with those of most other studies. 3,6,7,[9][10][11]20,21 Secondary glaucoma was the most debilitating condition, with 14.3% of these participants being blind.…”

“…This unexpected finding needs confirmation. Some studies 6,7,10,[24][25][26][27] have suggested an association between myopia and an increased risk for POAG. In our study, we found no association between myopia and POAG.…”

“…In addition, epidemiological studies have shown that the prevalence of NTG is much higher among the Asian populations. In the Handan Eye study, NTG accounted for 90% of patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG); the proportion might be even higher in the Japanese population, in which 92% of the patients with POAG were classified as NTG (Iwase et al, 2004;Liang et al, 2011).…”
