Preventing Deepfakes From Being Used for Impersonation and Defamation

Abstract

As technology advances, deepfakes have become a problem. Deepfakes can be used for impersonation and defamation, two of the major problems of the information age. Deepfakes for impersonation have been used to create fake intimate images. This research paper makes 9 recommendations for website policies, 17 recommendations for public policies, and 7 recommendations for public education to combat the use of deepfakes for impersonation and defamation. The author of this research paper previously proposed a field called misinformation identification engineering involving the development of algorithms and software to find, flag, or remove misinformation and disinformation on websites and in other documents.
