One of the best examples of this is the model of Balinese rice farmers developed by Stephen Lansing; he was able to show that a traditional set of planting rules, enforced by a hierarchy of priests, would generate greater protection against pests, and ultimately larger harvests, than a uniform planting schedule enforced by the central government (Lansing 1991). The model was especially useful, in this case, because it explained the observation that harvests declined, against all expectations, when a centralized planting system was adopted, despite the use of higher yielding varieties.…”
