Primary argon laser trabeculoplasty vs. pilocarpine Short‐term effects

Abstract: This is a prospective study of 82 newly discovered patients with simplex or capsular glaucoma from two centres, collected between 1984 and 1989 and selected at random for primary treatment by either laser or pilocarpine. Preliminary two-year follow-up shows that primary laser treatment gives a significantly higher number of patients where the intraocular pressure is successfully controlled. Primary argon laser trabeculoplasty has been carried out in 40 patients. The first treatment was given to either the uppe… Show more

“…Our results differ significantly from these ALT studies, in that although a comparable level of IOP reduction was achieved, the tonographic outflow facility increase following SLT was only about half of that observed with ALT 14–16 18. This is a curious finding which could indicate a difference in mechanism of action of SLT as compared to ALT.…”

“…Most studies on the effect of ALT on outflow facility were done in patients who were already on medical treatment making a direct comparison difficult 12–17. The only study of the effect of ALT on outflow facility in medically untreated eyes with POAG was performed over 15 years ago by Bergeå et al 18 A comparable level of IOP reduction was found in those with POAG but this reduction was associated with a much higher tonographic outflow facility increase (65%). Although Bergeå's study used the same measurement technique, the results are limited by the relatively small number of POAG patients.…”
